The bed system was created with the consultancy of professor Zerbi, renowned orthopedist with whom Castiglioni have already collaborated to design a hospital bed. The assignment proposed here was to design an innovative system that could provide various measures without interfering in the structure. The project is intended to maximize the ventilation of the bed frame system and minimize the transversal hammock effect. For that reason, the longitudinal bars were chosen thinner and the materials made of advance composites. The structural calculations for those elements and the prototype have been made at the CSI labs of the Milan’s Montedison. The frame is made of a series of fiberglass bars that form a rectangular cross-section, with soft transparent PVC endings arranged as the length of the body. Since it has no fixed frame, the length of the bars and their number can be varied as desired, thus leaving a great freedom of dimensions. The whole is connected to a flexible U-shaped frame with such a measure that stretches the fabric comprising head and footrests, made by a lining of coarse cloth that can be covered with any other fabric in the desired colors.
