In 1977, the SIt Siemens company held a competition by invitation for the design of a new economic telephone of which, according to market forecasts, at least fifteen million pieces should be distributed over the ensuing decade. Other then Castiglioni, other invited designers were Studio Albini-Helg, Studio Del Corno, Design Group and Maurizio Morgantini. Answering to usage functionality criteria, Castiglioni design a device in thermoplastic material, a handy set and that would occupy a minimal working space. The frontal dimension, smaller than those of the models being used, is characterized by the offset position of the receiver (the speaker), which presents itself to the user always in a radial sense. The dialer, either fitted with a disk dial or keypad, is offered about 30 degrees towards the viewer over a lower body, while the receiver owes its asymmetrical shape to the need of instantly understanding the diversity of use among the two capsules (mouthpiece and earpiece).
