SANGIROLAMO
Office system SANGIROLAMO (with M. De Lucchi)
(2004 Poltrona Frau)
The meticulous research behind this system, developed by Castiglioni and De Lucchi, which comprised numerous full-scale models in wood, started from an analysis of the functional needs of the users, including the examination of films, novels and paintings.
Their attention, at a certain point, was over Antonello da Messina’s “San Girolamo nello studio”, a painting where the character seems to stand apart from the surroundings in a quiet angle. The saint in his attitude, so close to their design intent, inspired the name of this system.
A table, a wardrobe and a console compose the modular furniture. The tabletop, in cherrywood or rosewood is sustained on its extremities by four iron-casted thin thin legs. The shape of the legs, a smooth line that somehow recalls the Liberty, is determined by the wish to avoid to disturb the commensals. The wardrobe and the console are a floor-based and raised versions of the “private” furniture.
The wardrobe-wall is designed to host a monitor, a printer, a fax, hi-fi or a television and their relative cables, through the backboard, but can be turned into a fully equipped work station adding a slide-out desk.
